about

Ask any musician and they'll tell you: Musical friendships last forever.

When you make music with someone, a special bond forms. Band mates know this. Studio musicians know this. Any musician who's ever heard a note they play or sing intertwine with a complementary note from another musician knows this.

The notes merge. The bond forms. A friendship follows. And, as I said, this friendship lasts forever.

My friendship with Ron Baumgartner formed when we played together for several years in a band called Heather. That was in the 1970s. Ron (aka, RB) was our drummer. I played bass.

Fun fact: The bond between a drummer and a bass player is particularly strong. It has to be. They are, after all, the foundation atop which every other element of a song is constructed. If they don't gel, the rest of the music doesn't stand a chance. And I gotta tell ya, for those several years, wayyyyy back then, RB and I gelled.

Fast forward to 2011. Kev and I were finishing up "Someone Else's Window," our third album as Gypsies in Cyberspace. Only one problem: The title track still needed a drum part. With Kevin's blessing, I called my friend, Ron, and asked if he'd be willing to give it a shot.

He was. (Remember, musical friendships last forever.) He did. And, no surprise, he nailed it. From that moment on, RB became our go-to guy for drums, whenever Kev and I started work on a new song.

Other musicians and friends have contributed other parts to many of the songs on the subsequent seven Gypsies' albums Kevin and I recorded together. From "Someone Else's Window" on, however, our drummer of choice was one Mr. Ron Baumgartner.

The twelve tracks on this album are special, in that they feature only Kevin, me and, well, Ron.

Kev and I have made a lot of music together, just the two of us...songs of which we're extremely proud. There were times, however, when we both realized that a given song would sound a heluva lot better "With a Little Help from Our Friend."

That's when Ron stepped up...and never let us down.

RB, my longtime friend and drummer extraordinaire, passed away on August 16, 2021.

Like everyone who knew him, I have my memories of Ron. I'm more fortunate than most, however. I also have an abundance of recordings, spanning almost 50 years, on which I can listen to Ron do what he enjoyed most: play the drums.

That's exactly what he's doing on these twelve Gypsies' songs, a special "tribute" album of previously released tracks Kev and I dedicate to the Drummer Dude, Ron "RB" Baumgartner.

Rest easy, my friend. You're keepin' the beat going on a higher plane, now.
