Distant Light

about

I went back to my country-rock roots for this one. Five chords and sweet harmonies. That's about as pure as it gets, when you're talking country rock.

My good friend and long-time musical compadre, Jim Gaines, came over one day and added the pedal steel part that drifts through the entire song. He also laid down an amazingly tasteful dobro solo. Jimmy and I first formed a band called "Heather" wayyyy back in 1969. How incredible is it that we're still making music with one another, almost a half-century later?

Another Heather alum, Ron Sachs, added to the musical magic of this informal "reunion" by contributed his distinctive guitar work and harmony vocals to "Distant Light". Few guitar players I know bring as distinctive a sound to a song as the good Dr. Ron. He amazed me when we first played together...and still does, today.

Ron Baumgartner, who rounded out the "core four" of Heather, contributed the drum track for "Distant Light". Bass players and drummers develop a special bond with one another. These two parts provide the foundation atop which the rest of a song is constructed. RB and I certainly shared that bond, "back in the day"...and nothing's changed, since then.

What a joy it was, working with these guys again, after so many years! And it all fell together as if not a single day had passed, in between.
